What types of wood need to be treated?
Which types of wood need to be treated depends on the desired results. Do you want to treat the wood to prevent decay or do you want to preserve the aesthetical appearance?
Durability classification of wood
In order to determine which types of wood need treatment they are classified for durability. The durability classification of wood is measured on a scale from 1 to 5. Where 1 is the most durable and 5 being the least durable wood.
The lifespan of durable wood is, without being treated, between 15 to 25 years. Non durable wood only has a lifespan of a few years.
It is still recommended that you treat durable wood like Western Red Cedar, to make it water repellent. This will preserve the aesthetical appearance and will prolong its durability.
